Data Quality

Every vehicle, operator and manufacturer page carries a badge showing how complete that record is. Here is exactly what it counts, and why some fields are deliberately left out.

The principle

The score only counts information that essentially every record should have. Fields that apply to some vehicles but not others are left out entirely, so a record is never marked down for something that simply does not apply to it.

Every counted field is worth the same. The score is the number of counted fields filled in, divided by the total number of counted fields. For a vehicle there are 13 counted fields:

Vehicles: what counts

Overview
  • Year built
  • Fleet number
  • Depot
Specifications
  • Deck type
  • Fuel type
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Emission standard
Capacity and access
  • Seating capacity
  • Length
  • Door configuration
  • Accessibility features
Accessibility is counted. Low floor, wheelchair accessibility and next stop audio matter a great deal to passengers planning a journey, and every vehicle can be described one way or the other, so this is treated as core information.

Vehicles: what does not count, and why

Bus name
Only a small number of operators name their vehicles, so it would be unfair to mark down the majority that do not.
Chassis
Many buses and coaches are of integral construction, with no separate chassis to record.
Battery capacity
Only applies to battery electric vehicles. Most buses on UK roads are not battery powered.
Standing capacity
Coaches, minibuses and some other vehicles do not permit standing passengers at all.
Wheelchair spaces
Requirements have changed over time and older vehicles may have none. Counting it would penalise historic vehicles.
Layout notes
An optional field for describing an unusual interior layout. Most vehicles will never need it.
Features
Wi-Fi, USB charging, air conditioning and similar are added extras rather than core vehicle data.
Notes
Purely informational free text, used only occasionally.

Operators and manufacturers

Operators
Logo Address Phone Website Service area
Parent companies also count the parent company and its logo, because that brand relationship is the point of those pages. Notes not counted
Manufacturers
Logo Website Address Phone Year founded Country Status
Notes not counted An occasional informational field, so requiring it would cap the score on records that are otherwise complete.

Spotted something missing?

Anyone can help improve a record. Vehicle, operator and manufacturer pages all have a suggestion option, and contributions are reviewed before they go live. Filling in a counted field will raise that record's score, but please only add information you know to be correct. Accuracy matters far more to us than a higher percentage.
